It belongs to the group of rare minerals. The name comes from the characteristic sharp-edged shape of the crystals (in Latin“spina” – arrow).It forms isometric crystals (octahedrons or rhombic dodecahedrons), often there are approximations. It is brittle and transparent. It sometimes exhibits asterism and occasionally a cat’s-eye effect. Theoretically, it contains 28.2% MgO and 71.8% Al.2O3, abundant isomorphic admixtures of Cr, Zn, Fe, Mn result in the formation of many varieties differing in color: red in shades (s. ruby), bluish (s. sapphire), green (ceylonite), brown (pleonast), yellowish (rubicel), brownish-red (s. almandine), black (hercynite-s. ferrous), dark brown (galaxite-s. manganese), blue-green or yellow (gahnite-s. zinc). It occurs in granular clusters and isolated grains. It is found in: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, USA, Madagascar and Burma.
